Rice University golf alum Michael Whitehead shot a 77 (+6) Thursday as he began play at the U.S. Open being hosted by Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Whitehead's first competitive round in a professional tournament featured a birdie in front of the gallery on the picturesque No. 18 finishing hole at Congressional. The Sugar Land native began Thursday's round with a shot over water at the par 3 No. 10. He made par on his first two holes before four bogey holes on Congressional's back nine.
Whitehead will be back on the course Friday, teeing off from No. 1 at 2:52 p.m. The top 60 players plus ties as well as any other players within 10 strokes of the lead through 36 holes will advance to Saturday and Sunday's final rounds.
