HOUSTON - Rice senior Michael Whitehead rebounded from an opening-round 73 to card an afternoon 70 while freshman Chris Contreras shot his first career sub-par round as the Owls opened defense of last year's team title at the 11th Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon.
The Owls are one-over par as a team (577) and tied for sixth-place with cross-town rival Houston. Florida Gulf Coast is 10-under par (566) and has a three-stroke lead over second-place Wichita State and is four strokes in front of New Mexico State.
FGCU shot a second-round 281 to take over first with 18 holes to play.
Wichita State began the day with a seven-under par 281 team score, establishing a new first-round record for the tournament. The Shockers' opening round was one stroke better than the 282 score Kansas carded to in the inaugural round of the tournament in 2001.
Both the Shockers' and FGCU's 281s on Monday tie for the third-best round in tournament history.
"I was very pleased with the 288 we shot this morning," Rice head coach Drew Scott said. "This is probably the easiest the golf course has played in five years so the expectations were too shoot a lower score. I am more proud of the 289 we shot in the afternoon. To begin the round, we were really struggling. But the guys hung in there and finished the round unlike we did last week (at UTSA)."
With his 70 Monday afternoon, Whitehead is one-under par (143) and tied for 11th.
Rice had four players all shoot two-over par 146s during Monday's 36 holes and are now part of a logjam tied at 29th. Erik Mayer and Tim Pawul along with Brock Wilson and Jeff Wibawa, who are both playing as individuals, head into Tuesday's final round with the same score.
After an opening round 77, Contreras birdied his final three holes to finish one-under par for Monday's afternoon round. His four-over 148 has him tied for 44th.
Louisiana-Monroe's Gustaf Kocken shot a second-round record 66, and with an even-par 72 to begin the day, his six-under par 138 has him atop the leader board. Kocken is one shot ahead of Wichita State's Calvin Pearson and New Mexico State's Gaston De La Torre.
The tournament's first-round individual leader was Texas-San Antonio freshman Ryan Werre. The rookie shot an opening round 66 to tie for the best first-round score in tournament history. Werre's round as well as the 66 turned in by Kocken later in the day, were one stroke off the tournament record (65) established by Baylor's Adam Meyer in 2002.
The tournament concludes with the final round set for an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start at Westwood Golf Club (par 72 / 7184 yards) in Southwest Houston.
Rice will be spread out over the middle holes of the golf course, with golfers starting out on the seventh through 10th tees on Tuesday.
"We are 11 shots back of the lead and there are five teams ahead of us so we have to play extremely well tomorrow to have even an outside chance of winning," Scott said. "We will probably have to shoot a 280 or below to catch up with those teams that are already 10 under par."
