IRVING, Tex. - Rice sophomore sprinter Chelsea Fong was named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday (Nov. 9) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
Fong posted some of the top times in the conference on the way to wins in three individual events, as well as contributing on a winning Rice relay, in a pair of road dual meets last weekend. She won both 200-freestyle races in dual meets at TCU and North Texas, for four-straight wins at that distance dating back the last three weeks. The Cupertino, Calif., native also won the 50-freestyle at North Texas with a team-best time of 23.83 that is among the tops in C-USA so far this season. Fong swam the lead leg on the Owls' winning 400-freestyle relay at North Texas, where her 51.69 intermediate time is the Owls' fastest 100-freestyle this year and among the best in the league. She was also a member of the Owls' foursome that swam a new season-best time in the 200-freestyle relay (1:36.39).
This is Fong's second time to win the C-USA Swimmer of the Week award in her collegiate career. She also earned the honor as a freshman last season (Dec. 9, 2010).
After meets on four-straight weekends to start the season, the Rice swim team is off until Nov. 17. The Owls return to action across town at the University of Houston Invitational for three day, multi-team meet for its final competition of this month.
