
Swimmers Fall In Dual Meet At TCU, 159-126

Fort Worth, Tex. - Rice sophomore Michelle Gean posted a pair of wins to sweep the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, but the TCU Horned Frogs claimed a 159-126 non-conference dual meet win over the Owl swimmers on Friday evening in Fort Worth, Tex.
Rice won six of the meet's 16 events overall. The Horned Frogs won eight swim races and both springboard diving events.
Gean swam a 59.20 to lead a 1-2 Rice finish with Shelby Bottoms in the in the 100-backstroke. The Owl standout from Kingwood, Tex., then tallied a 2:09.05 in the 200 for a 1-2-3 Owl finish with teammates Nicole Delaloye and Quincy Christian. Bottoms came back to win the 200-individual medley later in the meet with a season-best 2:06.59.
Rice senior Alex O'Brien and freshman Erin Flanigan traded 1-2 finishes in the distance races. O'Brien won the 1,000-freestyle with a 10:25.47 while Fanigan was second (10:27.67). Flanigan then won the 500-free (5:02.79) while O'Brien was second (5:04.83).
Owl sophomore Chelsea Fong posted another solid performance to win her third 200-freestyle in as many weeks, holding off a TCU charge to touch in first place with time 1:51.77. Fong then teamed with Gean and the freshman duo of Marissa Konicke and Casey Clark for the Owls' new season-best time in the 400-freestyle relay (1:36.39) that was a second behind TCU's 1:35.35.
Rice dropped its second dual meet of the season to move to 1-2. The Owls are back in action on Saturday morning (Nov. 5), for a meet against the University of North Texas. Start time against the Mean Green is slated for 11 am.
