For the fourth time in as many weeks the Rice swim team is back in action on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 4-5), only this time the Owls are competing on the road for dual meets at TCU and North Texas, respectively.
In each of the first three weeks of the season the Owls were in their comfort zone of hosting at home at the Rice Competition Pool. Now the Blue & Gray must compete in different venues on back-to-back days, but Rice head coach Seth Huston sees a silver lining with a break in the routine.
"We've had three home meets in a row, so you never know exactly how the team will react to the change," coach Huston said. "I think that traveling and getting out on the road will be good. It will be our first time to get separated from the rest of campus for a little while. We will be getting on the road together, as a team.
"TCU and North Texas are quality programs we feel we definitely need to perform well against," the head coach added. "TCU is solid across the board in all their events, and pretty deep. North Texas has improved and shown they can go fast and score. On both accounts, we're going to have to be really good to win."
Where the Owls came on strong in the second half of last week's five-team home invitational, getting back to consecutive dual meets provides some familiar challenges. Huston likes what he's seen of the team so far, and in the Owls' training this week.
"Last weekend we finished well, and I thought we had a good last session," Huston said. "On the last (400-freestyle) relay we really stepped-up and raced (3:29.80), and had some other good performances. We learned a lot in our meet last week and we'll tweak the lineup a little bit here this weekend. It's important for us to try and match-up this weekend, head-to-head, as best we can.
"Karina Wlostowska and Lilly Marrow have trained very well this week. Casey Clark had some pretty nice swims as well. We've been working to get ready for another big weekend."
