HOUSTON - Rice University golf coach Justin Emil announced Thursday the signing of Albuquerque junior golfer James Lee to a National Letter of Intent. Lee is the first signee for Emil who is in his first season at Rice.
"We are thrilled to have James become a part of the Owl Golf Family," Emil said. "He brings experience at the highest level of junior golf and has also had a stellar amateur golf career. He is a disciplined young man and will make an immediate impact on our program going forward.
Lee, a senior at Albuquerque Academy, began playing competitively at age 12 and has been named his Junior PGA Section's Player of the Year each of the past five years. He has qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur a total of three times and qualified for the Junior PGA Championship twice.
He has won over 40 tournaments over the past five years.
Academically, Lee was named to the American Junior Golf Association HP All-Academic Honor Roll earlier this year.
"James is more than capable of becoming a top player in our conference as well as excelling in the challenging academic environment at Rice," Emil said. "I have no doubt he will be a tremendous asset to Rice University and the rising success of our golf program."
