IRVING, Texas - Rice University's Jeff Wibawa was one of three men's golfers to claim individual medalist honors during an outstanding week for Conference USA golf. Wibawa, along with Harold Varner of East Carolina and Sam Love of UAB claimed tournament wins against competitive fields filled with nationally-ranked individuals and on Wednesday shared the C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week honor.
Marshall's Allison Harper earned a share of the Wendy's Invitational title and is this week's C-USA Women's Golfer of the Week.
On Tuesday Wibawa won the Third Annual Lone Star Invitational at Briggs Ranch after firing a final-round 72 on a day in which conditions were extremely challenging. With winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour, Wibawa was one of only four golfers in the 84-player field to shoot even par or better for the final round.
Wibawa finished the tournament with a seven-under par 209 (70-67-72) to win his first collegiate tournament. His second-round 67 included an eagle at No. 7 after back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6. The sophomore closed out Sunday's round with birdies on three of his final five holes.
The tournament field included seven of the Top 100 golfers in the nation according to GolfStat.com and a team field which included five of the Top 50 programs.
Varner earned individual medalist honors at the 2011 AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic with an eight-under 208 (71-68-69). Love claimed medalist honors, defeating seven golfers rated in GolfStat.com's top 100 with a career-best, 54-hole score of seven-under par 209 (70-69-70) at the Invitational at The Ocean Course.
Harber played a large part in Marshall's victory at the Wendy's Invitational, tying for medialist honors with a two-round score of 143 (70-73).
Wibawa, along with his Rice teammates, will be looking for a strong finish to the fall season next week when the squad travels to the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.
