Rice VB Drops Eastern Washington 3-0

Malibu, Calif. - Ashleigh McCord hit a match-high 12 kills to lead the Rice volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Eastern Washington at Pepperdine's Asics Classic in Firestone Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-20, 25-14, and 25-22. With the win, the Owls are now 3-3 on the season, while EWU falls to 1-5. For her efforts on the weekend, McCord was named to the Asics Classic All-Tournament team.
Laurie McNamara and Mariah Riddlesprigger each chipped with 8 kills apiece, Nancy Cole had 6 kills and Caroline Gill had 5 kills. Gill also led Rice with 5 blocks. Setter Meredith Schamun had a match-high 29 assists, while Tracey Lam tallied 15 digs. Schamun also had 9 digs.
EWU was led by Shelby Puckett's 10 kills and .240 attack percentage.
The Owls totaled 44 kills on the night and hit .276, while Eastern Washington had 33 kills and a .076 hitting percentage.
Next weekend, the Owls travel to Baton Rouge, La. to compete in LSU's Tiger Classic.
