
Rice Volleyball Wins at Southern Miss - 3-1

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Ashleigh McCord had 14 kills and Laurie McNamara 11 as the Rice Owls volleyball team defeated Southern Miss 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 20-25, and 25-22) at Reed Green Coliseum. With the victory, the Owls remain in first place in Conference USA at 2-0 and are now 7-7 on the season. USM drops to 7-5 and 0-1 in league action.
"It was really nice to see us block like that, because Southern Miss is aggressive," stated Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "Laurie McNamara did a great job off the bench blocking and killing and really was a spark plug. She added a lot of energy and fire to the court."
For McCord it marked the 14th time in as many matches that she posted double-digits in kills. McNamara, along with Jordan Meredith hit a match-high .400 with 6 block assists. Jordan Meredith added 9 kills and Nancy Cole had 8 kills. Tracey Lam contributed a match-high 23 digs. Meredith also had 13 digs.
The Golden Eagles tallied 53 kills to Rice's 48, but the Owls had the higher hitting percentage at .213 to USM's .112. Furthermore, the Owls had a season-high 14 team blocks (4 block solos and 20 block assists).
Southern Miss was led by Ashley Mell's 19 kills (.057), while Halie Ecker and Lauren Sears added 12 and 10 kills respectively.
The two squads face each other Saturday night at 7 p.m. inside Reed Green Coliseum on the Southern Miss campus.
