Rice Loses 3-1 to Southern Miss

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Rice Owls volleyball team lost a very hard fought match to Southern Miss by a 3-1 score at Reed Green Coliseum. Set scores were 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, and 26-24.
The Owls are now 7-8 on the year and 2-1 in Conference USA, while USM is now 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in C-USA action. Rice was actually ahead 23-21 in the fourth set but could not put it away to force a fifth game.
Rice had a trio of Owls to hit in double-digits for kills. Junior Ashleigh McCord led the way with 19 kills, while Jordan Meredith had 13 and Nancy Cole 11. Cole actuallyled , Rice with a .429 hitting percentage and had a block solo and three block assists. Setter Meredith Schamun had a match-high 52 assists.
As a team, Rice posted 60 kills and a remarkable .301 hitting percentage, but Southern Miss had 68 kills and a .353 hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles' Ashley Mell had a match-high 24 kills.
Rice hosts UTEP next Fri., Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
