Baton Rouge, La. - Despite winning the first set, the Rice Owls volleyball squad lost four-set match to the Tar Heels of North Carolina in their final match of the weekend at LSU's Tiger Classic inside the Pete Maravich Center. Set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, and 25-16. With the loss the Owls are now 3-6 on the year, while UNC improves to 6-4.
Freshman Mariah Riddlesprigger and sophomore Nancy Cole led the Owls with 11 kills apiece as Rice totaled 53 kills and a .158 hitting percentage. Conversely, UNC only had one more kill (54), but posted a .245 hitting percentage with 12 team blocks to Rice's 6 team blocks.
North Carolina had a trio of Tar Heels reaching double-digit kills. Courtney Johnston pounded a match-high 13 kills. Suzanne Haydel followed with 12 kills, while Christine Vaughen had 10 kills. UNC setter Cora Harms had 35 assists.
Owl setter Meredith Schamun had 42 assists, while Tracey Lam posted an eye-popping season and match-high 37 digs.
The Owls will hope to get back on the winning track when they host the Rice Invitational II next weekend (Sept. 17 and 18) inside Tudor Fieldhouse. Teams competing are Arkansas State, Samford, and Stephen F. Austin.
