
Buttacavoli Named Third-Team Academic All-America

TOWSON, Md. - Rice University senior golfer Michael Buttacavoli has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America® At-Large Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Men's At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis and water polo.
Buttacavoli, a native of Miami Beach, Fla., graduated from Rice University last month with a degree in Economics. He posted a 3.94 grade point average during his career at Rice.
A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District VI selection, Buttacavoli was a unanimous selection to the 2010 Conference USA Men's Golf All-Academic Team. He was also named to the conference's all-academic squad as a sophomore.
As a senior, Buttacavoli led Rice with seven, Top 10 finishes. He had a 74.07 strokes per round average for the year and helped lead the Owls to a runner-up finish at the Conference USA Golf Championship and a return to NCAA post-season play after a 13-year absence. Buttacavoli was an All-Conference USA Second-Team selection.
He began his senior season with a second-place individual finish at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational as the Owls won the tournament by two strokes. The victory was Rice University's first tournament championship in 11 years
Buttacavoli earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors after the UTA-hosted tournament. He shot a two-round score of 145 to tie for third at the weather-shortened J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate as the Owls posted a runner-up finish in the team standings of the event. Buttacavoli earned his second, C-USA Golfer of the Week honors of the year after that tournament.
