Owls Finish 12th at Border Olympics

LAREDO - After a second round that dropped the Owls from contention Friday afternoon, Rice made up little ground and settled for a 12th place finish at the 59th Border Olympics played at Laredo Country Club.
Rice freshman Jade Scott rebounded from a second-round 77 and carded a 73 Saturday to finish in a tie for 13th. He was the Owls' top finisher with a 220 (+6). Scott began the tournament with a two-under par 70 Friday morning.
As a team, Rice shot a 303 on Saturday to finish with a three-round total of 907 (+43). Texas State shot a 295 Saturday to finish with a three-round score of 876 (+12) and win the team championship by four strokes over Oklahoma (880). Lamar finished third with an 881.
Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen shot a 75 Saturday but after heading into the final round at six-under par, won the individual championship by two strokes over Auburn's Kyle Kopsick.
Behind Scott, Rice's second-best finisher was Michael Buttacavoli who had an even-par 72 and with a three-round score of 224 (+8), tying for 28th.
Rice returns to action March 15-16 when the squad travels to the Louisiana Tech Invitational set to be played at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La.
