NEW BRAUNFELS - After carding a 304 during Monday morning's opening round of the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate, Rice shot the lowest team score of the afternoon at The Bandit Golf Course. The Owls, however, will not have an opportunity to win a second straight tournament as an approaching winter storm forced the cancellation of Tuesday's final 18 holes with Rice seven strokes back of the tournament lead.
Rice was 14 strokes back following Monday morning's round but carded a 288 team score later in the day.
North Texas' Peter Fallon shot an even-par 142 to capture individual medalist honors by one stroke and help the Mean Green hold off the Owls for the team championship. Rice finished as the runner-up.
"It is disappointing we will not get a chance to play tomorrow," said Rice coach Drew Scott. "After having an off round this morning our guys really revved it up this afternoon."
UNT finished with a two-round score of 585 while the Owls had a two-round score of 592. Stephen F. Austin shot a 595 to finish third while Houston's 603 was good for fourth.
After starting Monday's second round in a tie for 19th, Rice senior Michael Buttacavoli fired a two-under par 69 during the afternoon to finish in a tie for third with a 36-hole score of 145 (+3).
Michael Whitehead tied for fifth with a two-round score of 146 (+4) while Christopher Brown tied for 13th with a 149 (+7). Rice freshman Jade Scott shot an 83 for the first round but had a big hand in the Owls making up ground Monday afternoon, firing a 70 to tie for 23rd.
The Owls' next tournament is March 5-6 when the squad takes part in the 59th Border Olympics played at Laredo Country Club.
