IRVING, Tex. - Rice freshman Chelsea Fong was named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, while the University of Houston's Lacey Truelove was named the C-USA Diver of the Week, the league office announced Thursday (Dec. 9) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
In a home dual meet against No. 8 ranked Texas A&M on Dec. 4, Fong won the 200-yard freestyle, finished second in the 100-free, and competed on two "A" Owl relays that notched new best times of the season. Fong posted a 1:51.88 to win the 200 and a 52.37 for second place in the 100-free. She swam the anchor leg of Rice's 400-medley relay that registered a season-best 3:52.27. The Cuperinto, Calif., native was the third leg of the 200-free relay that swam a season-best 1:35.84.
Though just a freshman and competing at the Division I level for the first time, Fong holds the Owls' top freestyle marks this season in the 50- (23.74), 100- (51.79) and 200- (1:50.63). The C-USA Swimmer of the Week Award is the first of her career. She is the third Owl to receive the honor this season after junior Shelby Bottoms earned the accolade for the week of Oct. 20 and sophomore Kylee Talwar on Nov. 13.
Houston's Lacey Truelove won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events last week at the University of Texas Invitational.
The Rice swim team next competes in a pair of double-dual meets on Dec. 17-18 in Florida. The Owls face Air Force and meet host Florida International in Miami on Dec. 17. Rice then meets the University of Denver and host Florida Atlantic on Dec. 18 in Boca Raton, Fla.
