Against the strongest field Rice will compete against this fall (six of the 12 teams in the field were ranked No. 41 or better), Rice senior Michael Whitehead posted his second runner-up finish in as many weeks. For his efforts, Conference USA named the Sugar Land native its Golfer of the Week on Wednesday.
Tulane's Janine Fellows was named C-USA's Women's Golfer of the Week.
Earlier this week at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke, Whitehead opened play with a 68 and shared a one-stroke lead after 36 holes of play. He finished the tournament one stroke back of the individual champion with a three-round score of 212 (four-under par). Whitehead finished ahead of six of the Top 100 collegiate players in the country.
Last week, Whitehead tied for second at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Invitational. He finished with a one-under par 215 at the tournament.
Rice closes out the fall season next week when the squad travels to the David Toms Intercollegiate played at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. Whitehead will enter the fall-season finale with a team-best 71.41 strokes per round average.
The Conference USA accolade on Wednesday marks the first weekly recognition for Whitehead this season and the second time during his career (March 11, 2009).
