DENTON, Tex. - Rice junior Kait Chura won two individual events and finished second in another, but the Owls' swim team fell to North Texas in a non-conference dual meet by a score of 152-110 Saturday afternoon at the Pohl Recreation Center in Denton, Tex.
Chura won both the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-individual medley, two of five Rice wins in Saturday's 14 swim events. The standout from Bozeman, Mont., led a 1-2 Owl finish with Stephanie Wei in the 200-backstroke as the duo posted times of 2:03.78 and 2:04.55, respectively. Chura also swam a season-best 58.75 to take second in the 100-backstroke and was the lead leg on the Owls' 400-medley relay that took second place with a time of 3:55.27.
Sophomore Alex O'Brien followed-up her Friday night win at SMU in the 200-breaststroke with another victory in the same event against the Mean Green. The difference was she swam even faster on Saturday (2:22.19) for her second individual win in as many days. O'Brien was also second in the rugged 1,000-free with a 10:27.27 and third in the 100-breaststroke with a season-best 1:07.94.
Early in the meet Owl junior Erin Mattson was second in the 200-butterfly (2:07.04) before bouncing back to win the 100-fly with her best time of the year (57.33). Mattson teamed with Wei, Pam Zelnick and Shelby Bottoms to win the 400-freestyle relay with a season-best 3:30.91.
The Rice swim team is 3-4 in meets this season. The Blue & Gray next competes in a double-dual meet hosted by crosstown rival Houston on Jan. 29-30. The Owls face both UH and the LSU Tigers in the two-day, three-team clash at the Cougars' Campus & Recreation Center Natatorium.
