NEW ORLEANS - Kris Richard scored 23 points, including 13 in the second half, as Tulane posted a 72-58 win over Rice Wednesday in Fogelman Arena.
Eric Vianney added 14 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers in each half. Vianney was 4-for-5 from three-point range for the game and the Green Wave knocked down 10-of-21 three-point shots.
Rice was led by Arsalan Kazemi and Lucas Kuipers each had 11 to pace Rice. Kazemi scored all 11 of his points in the second half to go along with a game-high eight rebounds for the game.
After leading 29-20 at the break, the Green Wave outscored Rice 8-4 in the opening minutes of the second half. Rice could not close the gap to anything less than six points.
Trey Stanton posted up inside for a tough layin at the 13:40 mark to cut the Wave's lead to 39-33 but was whistled for his fourth foul at the other end of the floor on the Wave's next possession. Stanton had scored seven points in the opening minutes of the period before being called for the foul. He finished with nine points.
The Owls turned the ball over 20 times while Tulane had 16 turnovers.
To start the game, Rice did not score a field goal until Lucas Kuipers' jumper off a pass from Connor Frizzelle with 14:32 to play in the first half. A.J. Holland stole the ball in the backcourt on the Green Wave's next possession and later got the ball back for a trey to give the Owls' their first lead, 7-5 six minutes into the game.
In the first half, the two teams combined for 24 turnovers including 13 by the Owls.
Vianney knocked down a pair of three-pointers for the Green Wave's final points of the half, including a trey with four seconds on the clock to give Tulane a 29-20 lead at the break.
The Owls are back in action at home on Saturday when they play host to defending Conference USA champion Memphis. Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 7 p.m.
