Birmingham, Ala. - Outside hitter Ashleigh McCord pounded a team-high 18 kills to lead the Rice Owls to a 3-1 volleyball victory over UAB at Bartow Arena. With the win, the Owls are now 10-3 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA play. UAB drops to 8-9 and 2-1 in C-USA action. Game scores were 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-20.
The win is also sixth-year head coach Genny Volpe's 100th career victory all of which occurred at Rice.
"One of the big factors in the win was Meredith's (Schamun) excellent distribution of setting as we had four players with 12 plus kills," commented Volpe. "Her setting kept them (UAB) on its toes as they are a really good blocking team. We needed to be quick and have a lot of options and Schamun's distribution was really good. We had a solid team effort and the team was ready and focused to play a tough team on its home court."
Junior setter Meredith Schamun set a match-high 58 assists for an eye-popping 14.5 assist per set average. She is now averaging 11.55 assists for the season.
Besides 18 kills, McCord had her second double-double on the weekend with 14 digs, second only on Rice to libéro Tracey Lam's match-high 29 digs. Senior Jenn McClean also had her second double-double for the weekend with 15 kills and 13 digs. Two other seniors Natalie Bogan and Jessie Boulavsky sported double-digit kills. Bogan hit .371 with 15 kills (2 errors) in 35 attacks, while Boulavsky had 12 kills (3 errors) in 25 attempts for a .360 hitting percentage.
Lam, a junior, now has 1,331 career-digs which ranks third in school history. She only needs 75 to break the school record of 1,405 by Yvette Kirk (2004-07).
Rice, for the match, hit .261 and limited the Blazers to .235. The Owls had 70 kills, to UAB's 55. The Blazers were led by Sam Serley's 19 kills and .471 hitting percentage.
The Owls return home next weekend when they host UTEP on Friday (Oct. 2) at 7 p.m. and Tulane on Sunday (Oct 4.) at 1 p.m.
