
Rice Beats UTEP 3-0 in Volleyball

Houston - The Rice Owls volleyball team remained undefeated in Conference USA action with a 3-0 win over visiting UTEP at Tudor Fieldhouse. Game scores were 25-20, 25-19, and 25-21. Rice improves to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in C-USA. The Miners are now 9-8 on the season and 2-2 in C-USA.
It was the fifth match this season that Rice has won by a 3-0 margin.
The Owls pulled away late in set one with a 25-20 victory. Natalie Bogan, Ashleigh McCord, and Meredith Schamun all had 4 kills apiece to lead the Rice attack. The Owls posted a .270 hitting percentage with 17 kills, while UTEP managed 8 kills and a .129 attack percentage.
Rice jumped out to a 20-12 lead before Lin Yuan ended set two with a kill for a 25-19 win. Rice was hot at the net with a .314 attack percentage as Bogan led all attackers with 4 kills. The Owls once again smacked 17 kills and Meredith Schamun was credited with 12 assists. The Miners hit .138 with 9 kills.
In set three, Rice hit .179 with 14 kills, while UTEP hit .088 (11 kills). Jenn McClean led the Owls.
On the night, Schamun finished with 35 assists and 9 kills (0 errors and .808 attack percentage) that was second only to Bogan's match-high 11 kills. Bogan also had a match-high .381 hitting percentage with 3 errors in 21 attacks.
Ashleigh McCord had 8 kills and Jessie Boulavsky posted 6 kills.
Rice hit .252 while the Miners hit only .117. Aidan Mooney led UTEP with 8 kills and a .278 hitting percentage.
The Owls now face Tulane on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse.
