
No. 23 Wichita State Beats Rice 3-1 in Volleyball

Houston - Emily Stockman led the No. 23-ranked Wichita State Shockers to a 3-1 win over Rice at the Mizuno Invitational II at Rice's Tudor Fieldhouse with 17 kills and 20 digs. With the win, Wichita State (9-1) won the tournament team title with three victories. Set scores were 19-25, 25-16, 25-21, and 25-21. Rice is now 8-3 on the season.
"Even though we were on the losing end of tonight's match, I am so inspired by our team ffighting extreme illness to compete as hard as they did," said Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "We had four starters battling illness and I saw a ton of heart and determination in this team. We bounce back strong and will be rested and ready for next weekend's tournament at UT-San Antonio."
The Owls were led by Ashleigh McCord's match-high 21 kills, while Natalie Bogan added 10 kills with a match-high .333 hitting percentage (10-3-21).
Rice won set on as it started out with a 9-4 lead. A block solo by Jennifer McClean gave the Owls a 19-16. Rice was ahead 22-19, when three straight Shocker hitting errors provided the Owls' final three points. McCord led Rice in set one with 6 kills and a .400 attack percentage, while Stockman and Emily Adney led WSU with 3 kills apiece.
The Owls started set two nicely with a 3-1 lead, but following a Shocker timeout, Wichita State tallied seven unanswered points en route to a 11 to 1 run to forge a 12-4 lead it would not surrender.
McCord had 7 kills for Rice as it hit .154 (13-7-39). WSU hit .276 (11-3-29) and was led by Stockman's 5 kills.
Set three saw the Owls ahead 15-12, before WSU outscored them 7 to 2 for a 19-17 lead on its way to a 25-21 win. In set three, Rice committed four service errors, while the Shockers also had 4 team blocks. McCord led the Owls with 5 kills as McGee and Stockman each had 4 kills for Wichita State.
Rice had an early 7-6 lead in set four, and was behind 16-12, when back-to-back blocks cut the deficit to 16-14. But the Shockers regrouped and outsocred the Owls 9 to 7 to clinch the win.
The Owls only hit .031 in set four with 9 kills and 8 errors in 32 attacks. Wichita State fared a little better at .156 (13-8-32) as Stockman posted 5 kills. The Shockers also had 15 team blocks to Rice's 7.
For the match, Rice setter Meredith Schamun had 42 assists and 16 digs and Tracey Lam had a match-high 21 digs. McClean also had 11 digs.
The Owls now play UTSA Tournament next weekend in San Antonio against Middle Tennessee, Washington, and UTSA.
In the evening's first match, South Carolina (8-1) defeated Harvard (2-5) 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, and 25-12.
