Rice University golfer Robert Burrow shot a three-under par 139 to win the two-round U.S. Amateur Qualifier played this week at Wahconah Country Club in Dalton, Mass. By winning the tournament, Burrow automatically qualified for the 2009 U.S. Amateur to be played later this month.
Burrow opened tournament play with a five-under par 66. He birdied the last three holes on the front nine and closed out the round with a birdie on the 465-yard, par five 18th hole to share the first-round lead.
Burrow was two-over for his second round but finished the final three holes one-under par to win the tournament by one stroke. Three players shot two-under par 140s to tie for second.
Only two of the three players to shoot 140s - Richard Werenski and Jean-Philippe Paiement - automatically qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Two other golfers will serve as first and second alternates.
Burrow, who will be a junior at Rice in the fall, will be one of 312 amateurs competing at the 2009 U.S. Amateur slated for Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Southern Hills has played host to 14 major championships including three U.S. Open Championships (1958, 1977, 2001) and four PGA Championships (1970, 1982, 1994 and 2007).
