WALLACE, N.C. - Rice University sophomore Christopher Brown shot a 67 Saturday to grab a Top 20 finish at the River Landing Intercollegiate.
Brown began the day tied for 46th place. With his final-round performance he finished in a tie for 19th with a three-round score of 217 (+1). The Owls began play on the 10th tee both days of the 54-hole tournament. Friday afternoon Brown bogeyed four holes on the front nine and finished with a 77. But Saturday morning, Brown was one-under par at the turn and wrapped up tournament play with five birdies on the front nine including the par four eighth and nine holes.
As a team, Rice shot a 293 Saturday and finished with a three-round score of 895 (+31). The Owls finished 13th in the 15-team field.
Duke overtook Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina State with a 280 (-8) and won the team title with a three-round score of 850 (-14). NC State shot an 856 (-6) to place second.
The Wolfpack's Matt Hill built on his second-round lead with a four-under par 68 Saturday and captured the individual title with a three-round score of 206 (-10). Duke's Mathew Pierce finished four strokes back with a 210 and was the individual runner-up.
For Rice and four Conference USA rivals, the tournament served as the final tune-up for the C-USA Championship which will be held April 19-21 in Sorrento, Fla. At the Red Tail Golf Club.
