
UTA Beats Rice, 81 to 64

Arlington, Texas - UT-Arlington defeated the Rice Owls women's basketball team Friday night 81 to 64 in the season-opener for both teams at UTA's Texas Hall in front of 880 fans.
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Kiarra Shofner's 17 points, while Meghan Nelson and Tamara Simmons each tallied 16 points. Shalyn Martin added 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Owls had five players in double-figures but could not overcome cold shooting in the first half (10-34; 29 percent) to be down by 9 at the break (39 to 28).
Sophomore Jackie Stanley, making her Rice debut after sitting out last season with a knee injury played 27 minutes and led Rice with 14 points. Stanley made 6 of 12 from the field and led the Owls in rebounding with 7 boards.
Sophomore D'Frantz Smart scored 13 points and had 4 assists and 2 steals. Freshman guard Jessica Goswitz in her first collegiate start responded with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals, while forward Morgan Mayse had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Another freshman making collegiate debut was Lacey Neu, who played 28 minutes and scored 10 points.
Rice for the game was outrebound 51 to 29 and shot 35 percent from the field. The Mavericks fared better in shooting 42 percent from the field.
The Owls will now prepare for Wednesday's (Nov. 18) game at Texas A&M at 7 p.m.
