CHOUDRANT, La. - Rice senior Michael Buttacavoli shot a 70 Monday afternoon as the Owls came back from an eight-over par first round to fire a three-under 285 and move into a tie for fifth at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Intercollegiate.
Buttacavoli shot a 74 earlier Monday and is at even par following 36 holes. He is tied for 14th individually, six strokes back of leader Cedric Scott of Southeastern Louisiana.
Rice has a two-round score of 581 (+6) and is currently tied for fifth with host Louisiana Tech's Blue squad. The Owls are 14 strokes back of second-round leader New Orleans and eight strokes back of both Middle Tennessee and Southeastern Louisiana who are tied for second. UALR, currently in fourth place, is just two strokes in front of Rice.
"We played much better this afternoon but still left a lot of shots on the golf course," said Rice coach Drew Scott. "I am hoping tomorrow we can be a little more efficient and play as well as we need to have a chance of winning this golf tournament. I don't believe the tournament is out of reach, but we will need to play a stellar round to have an opportunity to win."
The 16-team tournament concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes.
Earlier Monday, Rice freshman Jade Scott birdied his final two holes and led Rice with an opening-round 73. Scott and junior Michael Whitehead were tied 22nd with two-round scores of 146.
