Rice University's golf team will look to rebound from a slow start last week at the Lone Star Invitational when the team returns to action this week playing in the David Toms Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Louisiana.
The tournament will feature 10 of the Top 100 golf teams in Division I according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings. At No. 27, Northwestern is the top-ranked team in the field which also includes North Florida (28), Kent State (35), LSU (37) and Auburn (44).
Rice is currently ranked No. 59.
Heading the Owls' five-player squad is senior Michael Buttacavoli, who is averaging 72.55 strokes per round and has posted a pair of Top 10 finishes during the fall. Like Buttacavoli, junior Michael Whitehead and freshman Jade Scott will be playing in their fourth tournaments of the fall. Rounding out the Owls' squad is senior Christopher Brown and junior Robert Burrow.
The David Toms Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Louisiana bears the name of one of LSU's most decorated golfers. Toms earned three All-America honors while playing at LSU in the late 1980s and has gone on to a professional career which has included winning 12 PGA Tour events.
Tournament play begins Monday with 36 holes of golf on the Par 72, 7,106-yard course. Rice will be paired with Pepperdine and Ole Miss for Monday's play. The final round is slated for Tuesday morning.
