
SMU Beats Rice 3-2 in Volleyball

Dallas - Kathryn Wilkerson had 15 kills and 20 digs to lead SMU to a 3-2 victory over Rice in a Conference USA volleyball match at Moody Coliseum. The Owls were led by sophomore Ashleigh McCord's 23 kills, which tied her and the team's season-high output for kills in a match.
Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, and 7-15. The Owls are now 14-7 overall and 6-4 in C-USA, while the Mustangs move to 16-7 and 6-3 in the league.
The Owls were ahead 2-1, after winning sets two and three, but SMU rallied to win the final two sets. Rice is now 1-3 in five-set matches.
Also in double-digit kills for Rice were Nancy Cole posting a career-high 16 kills, Natalie Bogan with 12 kills, and Jessie Boulavsky added 11. Jenn McClean had a match-high 36 digs and 8 kills, while Tracey Lam had 34 digs. Setter Meredith Schamun posted 61 assists.
The Owls sported more kills (75 to 59) and hit at a higher hitting percentage (.234 to .202) than the Mustangs, but SMU hit .524 in the fifth set with 11 kills and zero errors. Rice meanwhile managed to hit .194 with 6 kills and 2 errors in 21 attacks in the final set.
In the fifth-set, Rice was ahead 5-3 before SMU went on to outscore the Owls 12 to 2.
Also in double-digit kills for SMU were Jessica Oliver (13), Dana Powell (13), and Kendra Kahanek with 10.
Rice now plays at Tulsa on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Reynolds Center. The match will be broadcasted by CBS College Sports on Wed., Oct. 28, at 6 p.m.
