
Southern Miss Beats Rice 3-2 in Volleyball

Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Southern Miss defeated Rice 3-2 in a closely contested Conference USA volleyball match at Reed Green Coliseum. With the win the Golden Eagles remain in atop of the C-USA standings with a 8-1 record and are 20-3 overall. Rice is now 14-6 overall and 6-3 in C-USA.
Set scores were 20-25, 28-26, 25-23, 20-25, and 9-15.
"Southern Miss was able to capitalize on its opportunities and we did not, especially in the fifth set," commented Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "USM was able to make plays happen in the fifth set today and won. We will continue to focus on improving as this conference battle is certainly far from over."
Ashleigh McCord led the Owls with 14 kills and 13 digs, while and Natalie Bogan and Jessie Boulavsky each had 12 kills. Jenn McClean added 11 kills and 15 digs. Bogan also had three block solos and 4 block assists.
In the two sets that they won, the Owls hit .269 in set two and .270 in set three. Rice only hit .054 in set four and -.074 in the fifth set.
USM was led by Caitlin Clarke's 20. Ashley Mell and Angela Hlavaty each had 15 kills and Sarah Jane Bowden had 13 as well.
The Owls are on the road for the second straight weekend as they play at SMU on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Tulsa on Sunday at 1 p.m.
