SAN ANTONIO - Rice turned in just one scorecard that was under par as the Owls struggled Sunday during the first day of the Lone Star Invitational being played at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Rice carded a morning round 300 then shot a 299 to head into Monday's final round at +23 and tied for ninth.
The tournament, which features a dozen Division I programs all from the state of Texas, concludes with the final 18 holes on Monday.
Texas A&M's John Hurley shot a two-round 135 (-9) to lead the field while the Aggies are -10 for the tournament and have a 10-stroke lead over second-place Texas.
Rice's leading golfer Sunday was junior Michael Whitehead who carded a morning-round 69 but had a double bogey on the third hole of his afternoon round en route to a 76. For the tournament, Whitehead has carded a 145 (+1) and is currently tied for 14th.
The Owls' top golfer through the fall season's first two tournaments, Michael Buttacavoli, had three double bogeys on the front nine of Sunday's morning round to finish with a 79 then carded a 74 later in the day. He is currently tied for 37th with a 36-hole score of 153 (+9).
