HOUSTON -- Junior Kait Chura led a 1-2-3 Rice sweep in the 1,650-yard freestyle, one of five Owl wins on the final day of action Saturday afternoon at the Hansell Double-Duals held across town at the University of Houston.
There was no team scoring in Saturday's somewhat untraditional events, but that didn't stop the Owls from competing. The Owls posted wins in five of the 10 races, including Chura in the mile and four different relays. Chura followed Stephanie Wei, Shelby Bottoms and Angela Wo as the anchor leg on the Owls' winning 200-backstroke relay (1:50.23). The standout from Bozeman, Mont., then swam an 18:07.72 to take first place in front of teammates Kylee Talwar (18:19.41) and Karen Gerken (18:27.47) in the rugged 1,650.
The Owls also coasted to wins in the 200-butterfly relay (1:49.34), the 200-breaststroke relay (2:10.36) and the 500 three-swimmer pursuit relay (5:29.49). There were a host of combinations used in the myriad of relays. Owls Erin Mattson, Bottoms, Talwar and Wo all swam on two different winning relays Saturday.
The Rice swim team returns to action in two weeks. The Owls next compete at the SMU Invitational in Dallas on Oct. 23-24. A full list of agate results are available at RiceOwls.com.
