
Swimmers Sixth After First Day of SMU Classic

DALLAS -- Rice senior Angela Wo finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 57.09 to pace the Owls' swim team on the first day of competition at the 2009 SMU Classic Friday night at the Perkins Natatorium on the SMU campus in Dallas.
At the halfway point of the two-day invitational meet Rice is in sixth place in the team standings with 90 points. The Owls trail fifth-ranked Florida (178 points), Louisville (156), SMU (140 points), Wisconsin (139) and Florida State (125).
After taking fourth in the 100-butterfly, Wo came back two events later and placed sixth in the 100-backstroke (58.76). The standout from Sugar Land, Tex., also swam the third leg of the Owls' 400-medley relay that finished sixth with a mark of 3:59.82.
Rice junior Kait Chura was fifth in the 400-individual medley with her season-best time (4:28.93). The Owls posted three other sixth-place individual finishes on the night, including senior Pam Zelnick in the 100-breaststroke (1:06.72) and sophomore Shelby Bottoms in the 50-freestyle (24.64). Freshman Stephanie Wei was sixth in the 200-freestyle (1:57.52), but sophomore Nicole Delaloye ended with a better finishing time racing in the consolation finals (1:56.64).
The Rice foursome of Bottoms, Erin Mattson, Delaloye and Wei teamed for a season-best 7:45.60 in the 800-freestyle relay. The meet concludes with nine more events on Saturday. The remaining event schedule is listed below.
