SAN FRANCISCO - Rice University opened play Monday at the San Francisco Invitational being held at The Olympic Club, the nation's oldest athletic club.
Rice junior Michael Buttacavoli was the Owls' top individual after two rounds, with a 36-hole score of 146 (+4) which puts him in a tie for 19th heading into Tuesday's final round. Buttacavoli shot a one-over par 72 before struggling on the first hole of his afternoon round. Starting on the par-three, 137-yard eighth hole, Buttacavoli shot a double-bogey five. He would play the rest of the round at +1.
Buttacavoli's one-over par morning round had him in a tie for 12th before the afternoon round.
As a team, Rice was +39 for its two rounds Monday (607) and will begin play Tuesday in a tie for 14th. The University of California shot three-under for the afternoon and leads the tournament by 11 strokes over second-place UAB. Cal had a two-round score of 568. UAB finished the day with a two-round score of 579 while Xavier is in third with a two-round score of 582.
Individually, Cal's George Gandranata and Michael Jensen both shot one-under par 70s Monday afternoon and are tied for first after 36 holes. Cal's Stephen Hal is one stroke back of the lead.
The final round is slated for Tuesday morning.
