After a close first set in which it won, the Rice Owls volleyball team (5-1) never looked back in winning its fifth match of the season, a 3-0 knockout of Weber State (3-3) in the Baylor Classic in Waco, Texas. Game scores were 31-29, 25-20, and 25-18.
"In the first set, we were a little shaky in making uncharacteristic errors but to do those things and find a way to win is a credit to the team," said Rice head coach Genny Volpe. "The team simply found a way to get it done."
This was also the first-ever meeting between the Owls and Weber State and the first time that Volpe had faced her old collegiate head coach, Al Givens at Texas A&M.
The Owls were led by Karyn Morgan's double-double of 17 kills and 10 digs.
"Karyn Morgan started off slow in the first set, but picked up steam as the match evolved,' commented Volpe.
Senior Jessica Holderness had 9 kills and 13 digs as Rice outhit Weber State .248 (53-19-137) to .197 (41-17-22). Rice libero Tracey Lam tied Holderness with match-high honors in digs with 13.
"Weber State did an excellent job of challenging our composure, because we were attacking them from everywhere on the court and they just kept digging them up," said Volpe. "But, our team persevered and maintained its composure in tight situations and that's what I really liked about this win."
Meredith Schamun again had a solid outing with a match-high 38 assists.
Rice next plays Baylor on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Ferrell Center.
