LAREDO - Both Christopher Brown and Michael Whitehead had under-par rounds and Rice University finished with the second-lowest team score of the day on Saturday as the Owls placed ninth at the Border Olympics held at Laredo Country Club.
Rice had struggled Friday afternoon and dropped from sixth to 13th from the first to the second round. But the Owls saved their best round of the tournament for the final 18 holes.
Brown shot a two-under par 70 to finish with a three-round score of 221 (+5) to tie for 18th. Whitehead shot a 71 Saturday and finished with a 228 (+12) and tie for 42nd. Between the pair, Michael Buttacavoli shot a 73 to finish with a 224 (+8) and tie for 29th.
The only team to play better than the Owls on Saturday morning was UT-Arlington which shot a 286 and finished in a tie for fourth with a three-round score of 882.
Arkansas shot a 291 but the Razorbacks' performance on Friday helped propel the squad to the team championship. Arkansas finished five strokes ahead of second place Lamar with a score of 867 compared to the Cardinals 872. Rice shot an 897, 54-hole score.
Baylor's Colston Williams shot a three-round, nine-under par 207 to win the individual title. Finishing in a tie for second with scores of 218 was Arkansas' Andrew Landry and Sam Chavez as well as UTEP's Roger Sloan.
Rice returns to play March 24-25 when the Owls travel to the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate in Springfield, La.
