Rice Ties for Third at Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - After back-to-back sub par rounds, Rice University's golf team shot a nine-over 293 to finish in a tie for third at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational on Wednesday.
The Owls finished with a three-round score of 859, seven strokes back of team champion Kansas State which carded an 853 (+1). UC Davis was second with a three-round score of 856 (+4). Kansas State, ranked No. 49 nationally, and UC Davis, ranked No. 15, were the only teams to shoot under par for the final round. K-State shot a 282 on Wednesday while UC Davis carded a 280.
Rice tied Fresno State for third. The Owls shot back-to-back 283s on Monday and Tuesday.
Individually, Rice junior Michael Buttacavoli rebounded from a front nine which included three bogeys and played the final nine holes at even par and finished with a final round 73, two-over par. He finished in a four-way tie for second at the tournament with a 54-hole score of 210 (-3).
Marquette's Mike Van Sickle shot a two-under par 69 Wednesday to win the tournament by one stroke with a three-round score of 211.
Rice junior Christopher Brown also finished in the Top 20 at the tournament. Brown shot a one-over par 72 on Wednesday and finished with a three-round score of 215 (+2) to finish in a tie for 14th.
Senior Kyle Kelley rebounded from an opening round 75 to shoot a 73 Tuesday then shot a 72 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 30th with a 54-hole score of 220.
The tournament wrapped up Rice's fall season. The Owls next tournament action comes Feb. 2-3, 2009 when the squad travels to the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
