EL PASO, Tex. -- The Rice soccer team's three-game win streak came to an end Sunday when the Owls suffered a 1-0 Conference USA loss to UTEP on the road in El Paso.
UTEP forward Brandi Aston scored the lone goal of the game in the 79th minute, following up her own shot from close range after Rice goalkeeper Meghan Erkel made a save on Aston's initial attempt.
Eight different Owls took a total of 17 shots on the day, including five on-goal, but the team could not put any into the back of the net. The Blue & Gray held an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities, seven of which were taken in the first half. It was only the second time Rice had been held scoreless in a game in the last two months.
Rice fell to 10-7-0 on the season and 6-4 in C-USA action. UTEP improved to 12-6-1 overall and 5-4-1 against the league. The Owls dropped from third to fifth in the conference standings.
Rice next plays across town at the University of Houston on Friday, Oct. 31, at Robertson Stadium to close out the regular season. The Owls will serve as the host of the 2008 C-USA Tournament beginning on November 5 (Wed.)
