La QUINTA, Calif. - Christopher Brown shot a two-over par 74 during Monday's afternoon round and is Rice's leading golfer through the first day at The Prestige at PGA West.
Brown will begin Tuesday's final 18 holes on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in a tie for 39th with a two-round score of 154 (+10).
As a team, Rice is currently in 16th place. The Owls struggled during Monday's morning round as the Santa Ana winds were stifling in the southern California desert.
Rice shot a 322 Monday morning but came back to card a 302 team score during the afternoon. The 20-stroke improvement from the first to the second round allowed Rice to gain on the field. The Owls are in 16th place with a 624 team score but their finish Monday afternoon was better than five of the six teams immediately ahead of them. Rice will open Tuesday's play two strokes back of Pacific and five strokes behind Kentucky.
TCU has a two-round score of 583 and leads the team scoring. UC Davis is three strokes back of the lead and Stanford is six strokes back.
UC Davis' Nate Pistacchio shot a 139 Monday (-5) and enjoys a three-stroke lead over the field. TCU's Johan de Beer shot a 142 Monday and is in second place.
Robert Burrow was the Owls' second-leading golfer Monday and is tied for 54th after shooting a 156. Michael Whitehead struggled Monday morning, shooting an 84 but rebounded for a two-over par 74 during Monday afternoon's play. Whitehead is tied for 65 after 36 holes.
Rice will play with Florida Southern, Kentucky and Pacific on Tuesday as the final round is set for a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
