The Prestige at PGA West Live Scoring
Rice University's golf team will compete against the strongest field it has faced to date this season as the Owls travel to La Quinta, Calif., for The Prestige at PGA West. The tournament is slated for a shotgun start both Monday and Tuesday on the Greg Norman Course (par 72; 7,156 yards) at PGA West.
This year's tournament field includes four, top 20 teams - Washington (4), Stanford (12) and Michigan State (17) as well as Florida Southern which is ranked No. 1 in Division II by Golfstat. There are seven other Division I teams competing which are ranked inside the Top 50 by Golfweek.
Rice will be paired with California (21) and Conference USA rival UCF (49) for Monday's opening 36 holes.
The Owls are coming off a 10th-place finish at the rain-shortened Memphis Intercollegiate held this past week.
Rice was within striking distance of a top-five finish prior to rains moving into the Memphis area following the first two rounds. The Owls finished just five strokes back of Louisville, which was fourth.
Rice sophomore Michael Whitehead was the Owls' top finisher at Memphis, tying for 20th with a five-over par, two-round score of 149. Senior Erik Petersen, competing in his first tournament in over a year after suffering a season-ending injury last spring, tied for 27th with a six-over score of 150. Junior Christopher Brown also carded a 150 at Memphis.
Whitehead, Petersen and Brown were the Owls' top qualifiers for this week's The Prestige at PGA West. Rounding out the Rice squad for the tournament is sophomore Robert Burrow and freshman Ben Thorseth. Thorseth, who prepped at Strake Jesuit in Houston, will make his collegiate debut at the 16-team tournament.
