Swimmers Defeat North Texas On Saturday, 154-134

DENTON -- Senior Brittany Massengale won three individual events and was member of a winning relay to help lead the Owls' swim team to a 154-134 non-conference dual meet win over the University of North Texas Saturday afternoon at the Pohl Recreation Center Natatorium in Denton.
Massengale led a charge that resulted in Rice winning nine of the meet's 14 swimming events. Junior Carlyann Miller won both freestyle sprints while sophomore Angela Wo won the 100-yard butterfly and freshman Kait Chura took first place in the 200-backstroke. The Owls also won both of the day's relays to close out the meet victory. Rice is now 8-3 in dual meets.
The Owl foursome of Angela Wo, Pam Zelnick, Keri Hyde and Miller combined for a time of 3:55.27 to start the meet off with a victory in the 400-medley relay. Massengale and freshman Karen Gerken then went 1-2 in the rugged 1,000-freestyle, but Massengale wasn't finished. The Alma, Ark., native came right back and won the very next event, the 200-free, with a time of 1:53.47.
North Texas, however, would not go away so easily competing at home. The Eagles won each of the next three events and UNT still had 26 more points from springboard diving waiting in the wings because Rice does not compete in the diving events.
Carlyann Miller ended the Eagles' streak with wins in consecutive swim events. She won the 50-free with a time of 24.23 and junior Diane Gu was second with a mark of 24.31. The Owl duo were then first and third, respectively, in the 100-free.
In the closest race of the day Rice rookie Kait Chura held-off a charge from North Texas' Bonnie Garcia-Meitin to win the 200-backstroke by four-tenths of a second. Massengale and junior Caitlin Warner swept the top two spots of the 500-free. Angela Wo came up big with a win in the 100-fly to give Rice a 31-point lead on the scoreboard, 135-104. Zelnick, Hyde, Massengale and Gu teamed to win the 400-free relay to close out the meet.
Next week Rice swims in the very same pool that hosts the C-USA Championships. On January 25-26 the Blue & Gray swims against SEC power LSU and rival Houston across town at the UH Rec Center Natatorium in an extended two-day meet. The Owls are back at the Rice Pool for their final meet of the year at home vs. University of New Orleans on Feb. 1.
