
Golfers Head to Purdue Midwest Shootout

Rice golf begins its third season under head coach Drew Scott this Saturday when the Owls compete at the one-day 36-hole Purdue Midwest Shootout in West Lafayette, Ind.
All 36 holes will be played Saturday with a shotgun start at 9 am (EDT) on the Kampen Course, a par 72, 7,467-yard venue. The 2008 NCAA Championships which will be held on the Kampen Course in May.
Competing for Rice are junior Erik Petersen, sophomore Michael Buttacavoli, freshman Michael Whitehead, sophomore Christopher Brown, and the lone senior Addison Awe. Awe and Brown are the top returning golfers, each with a 76.47 stroke average. Petersen follows at 77.15, while Buttacavoli averaged 77.89 strokes his first season.
The 16-team field consists of Arizona, Bowling Green, Dayton, Eastern Illinois, George Mason, IUPUI, Kent State, Loyola, Michigan, Missouri, Northern Illinois, Oakland, Purdue, Rice, SMU and Western Illinois. The Boilermakers look to challenge for the title as the Arizona Wildcats are the only team in the field that advanced to the NCAA Championships last season.
