HOUSTON -- Rice was swept by Houston 30-22, 30-23, 30-27 on Thursday at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
Sophomore Natalie Bogan led the Owls with 12 kills and six blocks. Juniors Jessica Holderness and Karyn Morgan were next with eight kills each. Holderness also paced Rice with 14 digs, while freshman Tracey Lam added 11.
After the Owls opened the match with two-straight kills, the Cougars came right back with eight-consecutive points to grab a lead they would not surrender.
It was a similar story in the second game, with Rice scoring early to take a 4-2 lead. Houston got back in the flow and after ties at 4-4 and 5-5, mounted a 7-1 rally to take control.
The Cougars looked as if they would continue the trend in the third frame, rallying from a 4-2 deficit and building a 15-9 lead, but the Owls never surrendered. Rice launched a 10-1 run to move ahead 19-16. Houston answered back, and the teams battled through six more ties down the stretch before the Cougars ultimately grabbed the momentum and held on for the win.
Houston's Justine Farmer led all hitters with 17 kills, while Hannah Sullivan and Lucy Charuk had 11 and 10, respectively.
The Owls (5-6) continue their stay at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center on Friday, where they face Wake Forest at 5 pm. Rice then closes out the UH Invitational against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, also at 5 pm.
