HOUSTON -- In a return to non-conference action, Rice lost 30-22, 30-28, 30-25 to Wake Forest on Friday evening in the second day of the Houston Invitational at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center.
For the second day in a row, sophomore middle blocker Natalie Bogan had the hot hand for the Owls, scoring a match-high 13 kills while hitting .500 (13-1-24). Junior Jessica Holderness was next with nine kills and a team-best 17 digs. Sophomore Channing Grigsby set up a season-best 26 assists, and freshman Tracey Lam added 15 digs.
The Demon Deacons jumped out to a 5-1 lead to open the match, but the Owls fought back to knot the score at 9-9. Wake Forest rebounded and slowly pulled away to take the game.
The Deacons looked to pull away again in game two and twice built five-point leads. Rice never surrendered, though, chipping away at the margin and ultimately tying the score at 28-28. It wasn't enough as Wake Forest scored the last two points to go up 2-0.
The action intensified the third frame, as the Owls kept the Deacons in check through six ties and a pair of lead changes. Wake Forest broke a 22-22 tie with a 4-0 rally then held on to take the decision.
The Owls (5-7) close out their stay at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center on Saturday, where they face Stephen F. Austin State at 5 pm in their final non-conference match.
