The Rice Owls golf team competes this Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in the 2007 Conference USA Championship at the Texarkana County Club (par-72, 6,935-yards) in Texarkana, Ark., which is a neutral site.
Representing Rice in its second C-USA Golf Championship are sophomores Erik Petersen (77.51) and Bobby Thomure (79.44), freshman Michael Buttacavoli (78.46), junior Addison Awe (76.46), and the Owls' lone senior, Heon Young Lee (76.15).
Lee and Awe are the only Owls that competed for Rice at last season's championship at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. Lee shot 231 (74-74-83) to place 52nd, while Awe tied for 27th with a 219 (69-76-74). As a team, Rice placed seventh with an 876 score (286-295-295).
Tulsa, who enters the tournament ranked 16th out of 284 Division I teams in the latest Golf Week National Poll, is the highest ranked squad in C-USA. Three other teams crack the top-50 in UAB (39), UCF (41), and SMU (46), and two others are in the top 100 in Houston (73) and Memphis (88). Other teams participating and their respective rankings are East Carolina (109), UTEP (128), Southern Miss (138), Rice (143), and Marshall (154). As a whole, Conference USA is the sixth-toughest conference in the country.
Teams will play 18-holes on each of the three days of competition. Live scoring for the tournament will be available on www.golfstat.com.
