At the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kan., the Rice Owls golf team is tied for 14th after the first day of action with a 616 total (302-314) at the par 71, 6,814 yard Wichita Country Club. After fighting 29 mph winds with gusts up to 40 mph, UT-Arlington leads the field at 579 (287-292), while Kansas State follows at 587 (294-293).
Junior Addison Awe and freshman Michael Buttacavoli lead Rice as each fired 76 and 77 scores to be tied at 39. Five players are tied for the individual lead heading into Tuesday's final round with a 144 score. UT-Arlington's Bobby Massa (72-72), Michael Van DeVenter (72-72), Kansas State's Robert Streb (71-73) and Mitchell Gregson (73-71), Oklahoma City's Colin Nel (72-72), and Oklahoma Christian's Bruno Buccolo (75-69) are all atop the leader board.
