HOUSTON - Rice golf coach Drew Scott has announced Richmond, Texas, native Benjamin Thorseth has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Owls.
Thorseth is a senior and National Honor Society student at Strake Jesuit College Prep.
Earlier this year he won the Greater Houston City Junior Championship and also captured the Texas/Oklahoma Junior Championship. He also qualified for match play at the 2007 United States Junior Amateur Championship, losing in the round of 64.
Thorseth is ranked No. 54 among this year's senior class by the American Junior Golf Association. He is ranked No. 67 by GolfWeek and No. 68 by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard.
"Ben has achieved much success on all levels of his game, from winning the Greater Houston City Championship to advancing to match play at this year's U.S. Junior," Scott said. "We feel Ben will add a great deal of talent to our squad next fall."
During the 2007 junior season, Thorseth placed in the top five in four tournaments and had seven total Top 20 finishes.
He is a two-time All-District 17-5A pick as well as the District 17-5A individual champion this past spring.
Thorseth was also the 2005 Greater Houston City Junior Champion and was named the 2005 Houston Golf Association Player of the Year.
He is the son of Jay and Lisa Thorseth.
