Competing at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., the Rice Owls golf team sits in 14th place after two rounds of action. The Owls shot their lowest one-round total with a 292 in the first round and followed with a 299 in round two at the par 71 7,074-yard New Mexico State Golf Course.
Sophomore Christopher Brown (71-75) and freshman Michael Whitehead (76-70) lead the Owls at 146 and the pair is tied at 37. Brown's 71 ties for his lowest one-round score this season, while Whitehead's 70 is the lowest of his collegiate career at Rice thus far.
Texas Tech leads the 17-team field at 557 (274-283). Kansas State's Joe Ida (68-68) and the Red Raiders' Garrett Merrell (64-72) lead with a 136 (-6).
The third and final round commences on Tuesday morning.
