HOUSTON -- Rice senior Brittany Massengale won the rugged 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 10:03.18 to lead the Owl swimmers on the first day of competition at the annual Phill Hansel Dual Meets, a five-way series of dual meets held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 26-27) at the University of Houston.
At the half-way point of the meet, the Rice swimmers lead three of their four opponents in the team scoring. The Owls lead meet host Houston 115-68, Florida International 145-31 and the University of New Orleans 150-17. Rice trails Mountain West Conference power BYU 127-58 with eight more swim events to be held Saturday at the UH Rec Center Natatorium. The meet begins at 11 am.
Massengale was sound and solid to finish first among a field of 17 entrants in the 1,000. The senior from Alma, Ark., posted the best time in Conference USA this season in the event, a winning mark of 10:03.18. Rice's Caitlin Warner and Karen Gerken also scored for the team in the 1,000 with a fifth and sixth place finish, respectively.
Massengale and the Owls' distance swimmers were in high gear and the sprinters followed suit. The junior tandem of Carlyann Miller and Keri Hyde took second and third, respectively, out of 19 competitors in the 50-freestyle. Miller went under the 24-second mark with a time of 23.97 and Hyde posted a season-best 24.34.
Hyde and two other Owls logged three more third place finishes in three other individual events. Hyde was in the 100-butterfly with a season-best 57.22. Sophomore Pam Zelnick took third in the 200-breaststroke (2:23.96) and freshman Kait Chura tallied a career-best 59:39 in the 100-backstroke.
Strong showings by two of the Owl relays bodes well for Saturday's action. Rice was second in the 4x100-freestyle relay with a season-best 3:29.92. The Blue & Gray also posted a season-best time of 1:48.29 in the 200-medley relay.
