El Paso -
Jareica Hughes scored a game-high 19 points and added nine assists and six steals to lead UTEP past Rice 65-52 Friday at the Don Haskins Center. The win was the ninth in a row for the Miners, who moved to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA action, while Rice fell to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.
With only eight healthy players available, the Owls had a 9-8 lead after a Valeriya Berezhynska jumper with 15:51 to go, but UTEP went on an 11-1 run to take a 28-15 lead with 6:26 remaining. Samantha Stovall and Maudess Fulton scored to cut the lead to seven, and Krystal Frazier narrowed it to five at the 2:51 mark on a jumper. Stovall converted two free throws two minutes later to send the teams into the half with UTEP leading 30-27.
Stovall's layup to open the second half brought Rice within one, but Izabela Piekarska canned a pair of three-pointers to put the Miners ahead 36-29. Two Frazier treys kept the Owls in the game, and Tiffany Loggins knotted the score at 43-43 with a three at the 14:13 mark. After a pair of UTEP buckets, Riverin drained two charity shots to tie it again with 8:49 left. After Riverin's three with 5:12 to go made it 52-50 UTEP, the Miners rolled up 13 straight points against a tiring and error-prone Rice team to finish the contest.
Stovall had a team-high 13 points, while Loggins had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Berezhynska also grabbed 10 boards and blocked three shots. Frazier was the other Rice player in double figures with 10 points. The Owls shot only 30 percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers.
Timika Williams had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Miners, and Tasha Marisett added 10 points. UTEP outrebounded Rice 52-38, and scored 29 points off Owl turnovers.
Rice faces Tulane Sunday at 2 pm in New Orleans. The game will be televised by CSTV.
