The Rice Owls golf team placed 11th at the Scenic City Invitational held at the Honors Course (par 72; 7215 yards) in Ooltewah, Tenn. and hosted by UT-Chattanooga. The Owls shot 305-314-318=937. Sophomore Erik Petersen , competing in his first road event for Rice, led the squad with a tied for 16th finish at 227 (75-72-80), while another sophomore, Kyle Kelley was two strokes back to place tied for 22nd at 229 (73-79-77). The Owls' other three competitors, Michael Buttacavoli (80-83-80), Bobby Thomure (77-85-81), and Kaz Hoffman (82-80-81) placed tied for 74th at 243.
"The golf course was very challenging during this event and the weather conditions were not ideal," stated Rice head coach Drew Scott. "We fielded a young squad, with four sophomores and a freshman, and they were able to gain valuable experience against a strong field. We now have three weeks before we got to Notre Dame to work our game."
Charlotte, with three golfers in the top six, won the Scenic City Invitational title with an 890 score (294-296-300), nine strokes better than Middle Tennessee (285-306-308=899). UAB's Garrett Osborn won individual honors with a one-over 217 (74-69-74).
