Rice golfer Addison Awe (Irving, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) has advanced to U.S. Open sectional qualifying after firing a 67 to tie for first-place at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie, Texas. He, along with five others, is now one step closer in competing at the 106th U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
"It was really windy today blowing out of the north and I was able to hit a lot of fairways and I hit some good really puts. It was pretty much the flat stick today," says Awe.
Awe's 67 came against a tough field of 90 competitors, which featured several PGA Tour members from the weekend's Byron Nelson Classic. He now joins his Rice head golf coach, Drew Scott, as a sectional qualifier.
"Addison (Awe) was playing in one of the toughest local qualifiers nation-wide and for him to win the whole thing is an incredible feat," comments Scott.
Awe recently completed his sophomore season at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and sported the squad's second-lowest stroke average.
